The most famous members of their groups usually go their own way. Still, I'm unsure how to see Rob Thomas here. His works outside the group overshadowed Matchbox Twenty at the time, though he didn't let the collective became his vehicle, which should be applauded. Nonetheless, when he went completely on his own, he tried to turn into a pop singer with a rock edge, if that makes much sense. I have to admit I find him more interesting than some, since you have a feeling he attempts to be wild, but he always mellows out in favour of listenability. Look, I don't think he should go full Scott Walker, though that would've been something. I'm maybe disappointed he just continues what he does with Matchbox Twenty, he's merely more open about his pop sensibilities here.

Album Review: Nickel Creek - Celebrants

Nickel Creek are all grown up.

Not even teenagers when the band formed in 1989, mandolinist Chris Thile, fiddler Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins are all in their 40s now. And they bring all of their experience to Celebrants - their first studio effort in nine years - with an assist from Mike Elizondo on bass.

The 18 tracks span an hour of acoustic, bluegrass-rooted music festooned with odd and abruptly changing time signatures and overwritten vocal arrangements. It’s as if Nickel Creek is trying to confirm the maturity already demonstrated by Thile’s Punch Brothers, Sara Watkins’ I’m with Her and Sean Watkins & the Bee Eaters.

The songs are slathered in echo-landen handclaps and finger snaps and interwoven with rests and segues that often seem complex simply for the sake of complexity. The playing and singing are exquisite; however, some simplicity would do more to highlight these strengths.

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine (2005)

Nineteen years ago today, on October 3, 2005, Extraordinary Machine, the third studio album by Fiona Apple, was finally officially released. Expected in 2003, the album was delayed several times by Epic Records without explanation, though its commerciality was suspected to be the reason. Originally produced by Jon Brion, Apple then began re-recording the album in 2004 with producers Mike Elizondo and Brian Kehew. Around the same time, the original tracks began leaking online, eventually leading to an entire early version of the record. When it was officially released, the album was both critically acclaimed and panned. Nominated for a Grammy, the album was listed as one of the best albums of the year by many publications and has since gone on to be recognized among the best albums of the decade. While there are two complete versions of the album in existence, what is clear is that either version is unlike anything else being produced at the time.

Have you heard about the MH370 conspiracy? It’s doing big numbers on the UFO subreddit right now

I think it's very annoying and distracting. There was a ton of progress over the last month around disclosure. There was a ton of effort digging into the bureaucratic structure of UFO secrecy. There was scrutiny directed towards suspicious figures like Mike Turner and suspicious bases like Eglin and Wright Patterson. There was scrutiny into NASA and the Air Force. Most posts were discussions of topics mentioned by people who are in contact with whistleblowers. Grusch, Fravor, Graves, Burchett, Luna, Gaetz, Moskowitz, Mellon, Coulthart, Elizondo. The whole UFO subreddit was very focused on the human side of the UFO topic. And that's the side we need to be focused on.

Then all of a sudden, every single post on the subreddit is MH370 and video analysis.

I just feel like it's a deliberate distraction. If it was just one or two posts, that would be fine. But it's suddenly every single post!
